Grading & Pass Offs

Spanish Fork High School Color Guard
Summer & Fall Grading Breakdown
Total points possible: 500

Attendance: 50%
____/250
Points will be deducted for not having all equipment, proper rehearsal attire or not being ready to begin on time. 3 tardies are permitted, as explained in the band contract, without a grade drop. 3 tardies may be made up but any beyond that will just be point deductions, 8 points at a time.

Writing/ Critique Assignments: 25%
____/125
Each student is expected to complete 5 (FIVE) critique/writing assignments between the Summer and Fall seasons. Preference is two summer critiques and three fall critiques. This should be 1 page, double-spaced and discuss in at least two paragraphs the good things the individual and team accomplished in a performance and the things that the team and individual can do to improve. Proper grammar, punctuation, sentence structure etc. are required. Papers which do not adhere to the proper rules of academic writing will be returned until they follow these guidelines. Due two Tuesdays following the chosen show. 25 points each.

Quizzes, pass offs etc. 20%
___/100
During the season, we may have “pop quizzes” to ensure that the students know their parade & show choreography. These will be done as short individual written assignments, individual or small group performances or any other manner deemed appropriate by the instructors. These are meant to help students identify areas in which they can improve and help the instructors better identify who does and does not know their own work. Watching others and reacting in color guard is very similar to “borrowing information” from another in an academic class. Neither are appropriate. Please remember that if a student does not receive 18 points or better on their pass off, they will not be permitted to perform until they do.
Expect 4 surprise (unannounced) quizzes at 5 points each and 4 scheduled pass-offs at 20 points each.

Attitude & Effort and Improvement 5%:
____/25
Attitude and effort are very important in color guard and on any team. While the student should always be striving to perfect their craft, the attitude and effort put forth are equally important. We always want to see students trying their best and those who do will be rewarded for it. At the beginning of the semester, each of the students will be given an opportunity to write a few personal goals they'd like to accomplish by the end of the season. These will be turned in. At the end of the season, they will grade themselves in this area based on how well they personally believe they did.
